When is it time to form an LLC?
● Am I freelancing as a full-time job, or is full-time freelancing my goal?
● Do I make over 20% of my income from freelancing? If you answered “yes” to either question, you might want to consider forming an LLC.
What are the benefits of forming an LLC?
● Asset protection. Liability insurance (https://www.freelancersunion.org/benefits/liability/) protects you as an individual from lawsuits and other claims, whether or not they’re your fault. Forming an LLC is a way to take that protection one step further. Creating an LLC limits your liability as an individual and helps protect your personal assets if your freelance business gets sued by a client.
● Taxes. Forming an LLC allows you to customize how you’ll pay your taxes. It will also minimize the self-employment taxes you pay as a sole proprietor.
● Business credibility. Forming an LLC can help show your clients that you’re committed to your business and can make you more attractive to potential clients.
● It’s simple and inexpensive in most states. Creating an LLC is as simple as completing and submitting Articles of Organization to your state. Application fees vary from state tostate , but tend to be inexpensive. You don’t need a Board of Directors, yearly meetings, or a company mission statement to form an LLC.
